AH515 havoc 28 feb 1943

Hi All
looking for info,

i downloaded 276sqn appdx from the NA

i thought at first the accident report for AH515 was wrongly scanned but on the last page of the report, it is addressed to OC 276 Sqn

so would that mean the aircraft was on loan to 276 Sqn ?

or the crew were from 276 Sqn ?

cheers

Hello,

What do you actually want to know?

No.276 Sqn was an Air-Sea Rescue unit. It did not operate Havocs (OC: Dec 1942-Sept 1943 - 45277 S/L Ronald Fairfax HAMLYN, AFC, DFM) - ex-BoB - http://bbm.org.uk/airmen/Hamlyn.htm

28/02/1943
Telecommunications Flying Unit, Defford, Worcestershire.
Havoc II AH515

Undercarriage jammed; swung on landing and nosewheel collapsed, Defford - Damaged Beyond Repair.

176663 (Pilot) Allan George SHEFFIELD RAFVR (later DFC, LG:12/12/1944, No.625 Sqn)
AUS405053 (Nav./Rad.) Edmund Thomas HEAP DFM RAAF (DFM, LG: 5.2.1943, No.102 Sqn - later F/L, MID)

Edmund Thomas Heap RAAF (W.Op./Air Gnr.), was shot down (by flak), on 8/9 September, 1942, raiding Frankfurt in No.102 Sqn Halifax II W7677: DY-Q (BCL3/207), (his 1st Op!). He successfully evaded*.

After returning to the UK, Eddie Heap RAAF, served with the CGS (Suttton Bridge), TFU, 60 OTU, 2 GSU & 487 Sqn RNZAF (+ a short stint with the renamed 268 Sqn).

Hi
yeah there is no record of havoc a/c with 276 , but trying to figure out why 276Sqn was sent details of the accident, if it wasn't one of their aircraft ?
or a type they operated ?

i.e. could the a/c be on loan to 276 or the crew members part of 276Sqn

cheers

Hello,

Don't have much on 176663 Allan George SHEFFIELD DFC. He does receive a mention here: http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...-2SFTS-1940-41

Maybe others can fill in the gaps?

Col.
