Ju 88 paint scheme?

I've just noticed that these Ju 88's have their tails painted to resemble "round" tails versus "square" tails. Was this done on purpose or is this just a coincidence of the camo paint applied?

Re: Ju 88 paint scheme?

Hi Revi,
I first published this photo in AIRFOIL #1, 1983 and made note of these peculiarly-painted tails then. The precise reason for marking these G-6’s in this fashion eluded me then. However, as I have documented four so far, I now presume that these old-style-tail-mimic schemes were purposefully done.
The WNr. of the Ju 88 G-6 in the left foreground is 620313; while Ju 88 G-6 9W+AW in the far background is 620557.
Respectfully,
Steve Sheflin

Incidentally, that looks very much like tail-warning radar antenna on the wing of that darker-painted machine.

Manching, photo source please?

Hi Ed,
I don't think you are addressing me, but the original Manching photo source is US Army photo 195630 USA.

Re: Ju 88 paint scheme?

Ok, apologizes, forgot specify whom to expect answer. Thought Revi16 whold perhaps have it. Source number is then NARA 111-SC-195630 (Signal Corps, US Army),
will look at it next trip: Was personally there recently; these are basically contact pics. One needs order larger ones to get from the negative, or a scan from a larger print or film.
See Revi16 has such a copy!
Thanks so much.

Re: Ju 88 paint scheme?

Nick, the dark-coloured Ju88G-6 is 9W+ge.CL, WNr.620983 of 3./NJG 101, wearing the camouflage pattern diagnostic of this unit.

Steve, I have the Ju88G-6 machine in the background as 2Z+AW WNr.620557 of 12./NJG 6. I'd venture a guess that the Ju88G-6 (WNr.620313) whose tail is in the foreground was also a IV./NJG 6 machine: 2Z+??.

Cheers,

David

Re: Ju 88 paint scheme?

Hi David,
What we have here is yet another example of what old age does to many of us.
Of course you are correct regarding the unit codes of the two Ju 88 G-6’s with the old-style-tail-mimic schemes; they are 2Z+AW and 2Z+__.
This would have been obvious to me had I merely read my own database files.
Respectfully,
Steve Sheflin

Hello,
with that mimic it looks like the tail of an old Ju 88R!
