9 April 1940 - Major Sch loss - Kristiansund area

I just read the book written by Fritz DETTMANN, published in 1940.

He mentions about a certain Major SCH and Oberleutnant H. who were reported missing in action on the 9th April 1940 around Kristiansund, in Norway and later were rescued (fished) by a Kriegsmarine boat, one hour after the belly landing, some 30 km from the coast.

I have tried to find such a loss at Ksorens site, dedicated to the Norway Wrecks in WW2, but got no joy.

I do believe this may be a KG 26 machine. Does anyone do have more information or a possible match about this loss and full crew names??

Hello Adriano,

This loss was the subject of another query on this forum, a decade ago - http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=12246

An extract from the book The German Invasion of Norway: April 1940 by Geirr H. Haarr. "Flying low over the city, Major Gerhard Schäper's aircraft took hits in the port engine, probably from fire from Odin. The pilot, Oberleutnant Hippel, struggled to keep the machine airborne, but the engine seized and he had to land at sea, some thirty kilometres offshore."

The Odin was a Norwegian destroyer, soon to be captured in the harbour by the Germans, along with its sistership. This was one of the shockign examples of Norwegian military unpreparedness during the invasion:

Hello Robert and Dan,

Thank you for your clarification and 100% match.

The book is the Portuguese version of 1940 from the original tittle: "40 000 Kilometer Feindflug - Über Polen, Norwegen, Frankreich auf England! Ein Kriegsberichter der Luftwaffe erzählt" by Fritz Dettmann.

A very interesting read, if you discount the Propaganda and superiority sense (yes they were winning by that time) on the printed pages. Nonetheless, na interesting Reading with first hand accounts of the Luftwaffe repórter (journalist) who later won the DKiG.

Dear Robert,

As you requested (and I forget to bring the book yesterday), here are the relevants items of PART I of Fritz Dettmann's book mentioned previously

PART I - cover the Polish Campaign (Pgs.17-47)
PART II - In front of British Islands (Pg.47-113)
PART III - Norway (Pg.113 -135
PART IV - France (Pg.135-end)

From PART I, the following topics are mentioned or written about:
* Bromberg
* Kutno (Fi 156 rescue)
* 25/9/1939
* Warsaw (27/9/39)
* Warsaw (28/9/39)
* End (4/10/39)

Hope this will be relevant for you. Any details you may need, please do ask me. As previously informed, the book is flourished with Propaganda and we may read it with that "discount" in mind; however it is well written, by someone who actually saw combat and flew in combat (and was a journalist too)...No precise details or military information are told, off course...since it may have been censored, as the names of Major Sch and Oberleutnant H....

Most sincerely yours,
Adriano S. Baumgartner
