Death of W/C A. S. Dredge, DSO, DFC

According to Shores in Those Other Eagles, W/C Alan Sydney Dredge, DSO, DFC (serv.no. 63285) was killed in a flying accident on 18 May 1945 in a Mosquito. The CWGC site confirms this date but neither source gives a unit or serial of the Mosquito involved. I have found two Mosquito losses on that date due to accidents, both FB.VIs: HJ758 of 13 OTU and RF605 of 248 Sqn. A third Mosquito VI of 21 Sqn. (HX969) is listed as "struck off charge" on that date without further explanation.

Can anyone say whether one of these was the machine Dredge was flying?

Thanks,
Tom

Hello,

Shores is wrong on several counts.

The correct service numbers for Dredge were: 741870/(63785).

Dredge was killed on 18th May, 1945, when Gloster Meteor III EE238 (of No.1335 Conversion Unit), rolled and crashed at Farnborough.

Col.
