Hi Clint. The star was formerly carried by VB103, the Nieuport captured in 1916; there are several other photos of it showing the big spinner. N103 used Roman numerals, the "V" was repeated on top left wing.

The seventh victory for von Althaus came on 2 July (1916), when he shot down a Nieuport 11 'Bebe' (Baby) or scout of Escadrille F 114. On the same day, Escadrille N 103 reported a Nieuport 17 as missing; both aircraft were operating in the same area. The plane had the serial number 1420 and seems to have been pictured in a photo album of a member of FFA 23. The Nieuport piloted by MdL (Andre) Seigneurie, was captured intact.

Clint. I know you are interested in A-H in WW1, I have an old article in FLYING REVIEW (Jan. 1960) on Frigyes Hefty's baling-out from his Albatros (Flik.42J) on 22 Aug. 1918 shot down by a Hanriot; would you like me to scan it in sometime?

Just so nobody misunderstands your statement. The unit was Esc 103 all the time. The French used a prefix to emphasize their units main equipment.
When using Voisin bombers, thus VB103 and when the Nieuport became the main equipment the prefix (only) switched to N.

The first Nieuport looks like a 17 and carries the serial N1831 (or possibly N1834. Another photo has been sold on e-bay where the serial can be seen much more clearly.
I also believe the unit is N86 but with the shooting star painted a bit more flamboyant than usual.

The second one looks like a two-seater. Any taker for an ID?

Hi Stig. The Nieuport XVII N1831 in the photo was from N.77 (SPA.77 from August 1917),their insignia was a cross of Jerusalem on a pennant but some XVIIs had elaborate personal emblems, the comet was Ltt. Jose Maria ( POW). It was repeated on top of the fuselage.

N.86 had a winged star rather than a comet, mostly on SPADS.
I hope I havn't got my facts wrong !!!

The other looks like a Nie.10 or early 12, later had different cowlings.

So it was a personal emblem. Oh well, the aircraft is certainly not carrying any N77 unit markings. The French obviously did pretty much as they wanted to.... :)

Indeed the second one is a 10 or 12, but which one?

Many thanks Col. for having matched the loss of this captured Nieuport with the info put in the book of Johan Ryheul (that I have). I think you have "milked" this book and put details in your data.
