RAF raid on Munich 5th June 1940

Dear forum members,

is there info available on losses with the third RAF attack on Munich?
I do have a silver cup given to a Flak soldier of Schwere Flak Abteilung 256.
The date inscripted is 5th of June 1940.

Thanks in adavnce for any hints!

There is no RAF raid on Munich in June 1940

The heavies were too slow to go there and return in the dark on summer nights

The only a/c that went to Munich in early or late summer were the Mosquitos much later in the war

Any Armée de L'Air raid reported on that particular date?

First RAF Bomber Command raids on Munich were 19/20 September 1942 and 21/22 December 1942.
In later years none were in June.
The third raid was on the 9/10 March 1943,
5 Lancaster's, 2 Halifax's and 1 Stirling.
Am sure that the first Mosquito raid was 17/18 May 1943, classed as a Minor Op. 3 a/c no losses.

An interesting thought occurred, different German cities were only vulnerable at certain times of the year, for example Hamburg only really becomes viable toward the end of July and Berlin from October onwards.

You could draw a map or several maps showing viable night targets based on time of year. A bit like plots of ice coverage

Is there any evidence the Germans did this and moved their fighters around accordingly?

Dutch and Netherlands East Indies newspapers of those June 1940 days describe several Anglo-French attacks on non-military targets deep in Germany.
In the night of 3/4 June two airplanes dropped bombs that came down 10 to 18 kms east of "Hemmingen" (= Memmingen?) and others at and near "Rien" (= Riem airfield?).
One person was injured. This all in the wide Munich area.

In the same night bombs near the Morbach-Hoxel rail track, no damage.
Also bombs at/near Ingelsheim (= Ingelheim), Brausach (= Braubach?), St. Goarshausen, Frankfurt/Main and Bad Homburg, with three fatalities and six injured, plus damaged houses.

Always worth trying the German Docs in Russia site for events in 1940: the situation report for the night of 4/5 June 1940 reports bombs falling on Munich: https://wwii.germandocsinrussia.org/...inspect/zoom/5

The summary on the first page of the sitrep says that "In the Strasbourg – Basel sector of the front, between 2300 and 0200 hrs. several enemy bombers flew in as far as the Munich – Augsburg – Freidrichshafen area".

Taking Chris's point about the distance and the hours of darkness, could the attackers have been French rather than British?

Re: RAF raid on Munich 5th June 1940

Newpapers hinted that attacks were retaliations for German bombs on/near Paris the day(s) before, so French involvement likely here.

Post # 7. Indeed, other news reports describe French night attacks on Mannheim, Ulm, Ludwigshafen (BASF factories) and Munich.

Just to add that according this link https://aviationsmilitaires.net/v3/k...4/farman-f2222 Farman F.222 N° 34 crashed due to fuel starvation after its reservoirs were pierced by German flak on the way back from its raid on Munich... Unit was GB 1/15.
