Crashlanded RAF airplane on beach

A nice picture of what looks to be a crash landed Spitfire, with the yellow letter "L", with the tail broken off. The odd thing is that the airplane appears to have an "A" type roundel on the side, instead of a "A1" roundel with the outer yellow ring.

Any ideas as to the identity of this airplane?

Thanks! I though the fuselage cross section was too big for a Spitfire but wasn't sure
