RAF Bomber shot down at Suggerath, 1 July 1941
Hello,
One of my contacts is trying to identify a RAF bomber shot down by 7. Flakdivision at Suggerath, Germany, on 1 July 1941. http://www.maplandia.com/germany/nor...erg/suggerath/ The only losses in this area were during the night of 30 June-1 July, and there are IMHO two possibilities: _ Whitley V P5018 of 10 Sqn RAF. No crash location in Chorley book, the two crew who died are buried in Reichswald. _ Hampden I AD916 of 83 Sqn. Chorley says it crashed at Düren on the east bank of the Rur River. 1 KIA, 3 POW. I would like to know the crash location of the first bomber, and to have a confirmation of the second. Thanks in advance |

To be honest Hampden X3134 EA-C of 49 Sqn could also be added to the list as there is nothing to say why it ditched that night. Was it out of fuel or damaged by flak?

You're right, I was thinking that a bomber "shot down at Suggerath" means crashing at Suggerath, so was trying to confirm the crash places of both known losses in Germany, but it may be just a claim.

Laurent, I am not sure but I have a Wellington loss in Sueggerath. I son't know the date, but she came down near the Reichsarbeitslager. Danny
P.S. I live 3 km from there. |

Hello Danny,
Can you tell more about this Wellington ? |
Re: RAF Bomber shot down at Suggerath, 1 July 1941
Laurent, I wish I could. I live in Geilenkirchen and have been trying to research the airlosses there. The problem is that I am stationed with the Army in Bavaria and only get to go home every couple of weeks. When I retire next year I was going to research that crash more in detail. I have been to the site, but have not yet found a single piece.

Laurent, I just looked online at the Sueggerath history and they mention the crash of a Hampden between Muellendorf and Sueggerath. These towns are 2-3km apart. The Wellington was in 43. Danny

Thanks Danny, I have found this online history: http://www.sueggerath.de/Sueggerath/chronik.htm.
So it seems that the Hampden I AD916 of 83 Sqn was the one that crashed at Süggerath this night. |
