KG 2 October 3/4,1943
 

Good Morning. Below is a combat report of a returning RCAF Halifax. Does anyone have an idea who the attacking aircraft may of been.

F/Sgt D. Cook RCAF and crew flying Halifax II JB-967 coded VR-F were attacked by an intruder at position of 53:18N-00:41W, (NW of Lincoln) at 00:22 hours while flying at 3,000 feet. There was 5/10 cloud, about 1,500 feet, above the Halifax. Visibility was poor, a very dark night. The rear gunner sighted tracer coming towards him from an aircraft he could not see. First indication of attack, was tracer coming in from the port quarter approximately same height. The rear gunner estimates the attacking aircraft commenced firing at 400 yards with a five second burst. He immediately tried to give combat maneuvers, corkscrew port, only to find his intercom unserviceable. Before he could make use of his call light, the attack ceased, due to the quick actions of the pilot, F/Sgt Cook, on seeing tracer on his starboard side, extinguished his navigation lights and made a diving turn to port. The rear gunner did not return fire on the unseen attacker, most likely an intruder. It may be assumed, that the only visual contact of the Halifax, was the navigation lights. The Halifax sustained a damaged elevator. Controls failed on landing and aircraft crashed on their own aerodrome, with the wing being torn off and fuselage broken in three pieces.

Hi Richard

Kg2 made no claims this night, so it is hard to say. However the pilots that were claiming in the last third of 1943 were Lt.Walther, Johann Trenke, Heinz Günther Baak, Rudolf Abrahamczik, Wolf Dietrich Meister and Heinz Holzmann. So I can only say that these pilots were active around that time.

My guess is if it was a V/KG 2 intruder (likely) and no crash was observed, no claim was submitted
