Hawker Hurricane shot down near Sedan

Hello guys,

I have a good question for you.

I found near Sedan a Hurricane I that I can’t identify.

1. This is a Hurricane made by Hawker and not by Gloster.
2. This is a Mark I.
3. Witnesses said she was shot down on May 14th 1940 but this is absolutely not certain but in any case before 1941 (so I guess)…
4. No trace of personal item of the pilot found on site, so pilot probably baled out (French site on may 14th 1940).
5. Aircraft shot down in wood.
6. one piece :

Hawker Aircraft limited
Kingston-on-Thames
England
HURRICANE I Aircraft
Protected by british patent N° S
282926 286482
292?26 314131
440358
British Patent Application n° S

7. One Piece :
Elevator Starb
DRG-099920/1
SFR-
PA/41?/99313
PA 6 AID GO7
Date 21-7-39

Two questions for top specialists from this famous forum TOCH:
1. What does this mark mean: PA?
2. What are the serial numbers of Hurricane mark I made by Hawker between July 1939 to June 1940?

Let’s hope we could identify this one. This is not Jeffries’s one… Have a good fun…

What is the basis for concluding this is a Hawker rather than Gloster built aeroplane?

Have you found any stamps marked AH?

The patents plate for Hawker aircraft was (apparently) applied to Hawker and Gloster built aeroplanes. It indicates that the patents were held by Hawker, not that Hawker built the aeroplane. I have one exactly the same from a Gloster built aeroplane.

Not sure about PA, but it is possibly a manufacturer who built a sub-assembly - in this case the starboard elevator. I have asked a colleague to look up the codes for you, but it could be something like Morris Cars for example.

I can give you the batches of build numbers for Hawker made aircraft, but only when I have a bit of time in next few days. First, please confirm that you are satisfied this is Hawker built. Look for the little AH stamps on stainless steel parts. Perhaps you have already found these? Glosters are marked with a little G - but I expect you know all that!

Bonjour Andy,

Thank you very much for your help. I completely agree with what you wrote.

I confirm you, there are several stamps "HA" but not "AH". Does it make a difference? Behind the first plate (Hawker aircraft limited Kingston-....) I could read "A 86591 1" and "HA 180".

This case is in good hand with you. Take all the time you need and thank again for your help...
