You can find the Luftflotte 3 War Diary for September 1944 online here: https://heritage.canadiana.ca/view/o...17/300?r=0&s=1

(Please note that it is in German)

It does say (frame 485) that 187 aircraft of II. Jagdkorps were in action, plus another 53 from 5. Jagddivision.

Elsewhere on that Canadian site, Reel T-2430 has the 21st Army Group Tactical HQ daily logs for September, so a look there would give you the view from the ground.

From ULTRA, I can add:

(HP 1865) Total effort, firstly Jagdkorps II (a) on 27th 119 aircraft serviceable. Morning, JG 2 and JG 26 operated against four-engined raid. Losses: 2 Fw 190 shot down, 1 pilot killed, one wounded; 4 Fw 190 still missing on 29th. Afternoon, JG 2, JG 27 and JG 27 operated. Combat Krefeld area. Losses: 4 Me 109 still missing on 29th. Total sorties 87.

(HP 1936) Further to HP 1865: (1) attack by JG 2 and JG 26 on four-engined raid was made because fighters came upon strong formations of Allied fighters escorting bombers. Attack was made on fighters, not repeat not bombers. No repeat no suggestion that these units are being used specifically for interception of strategic raids.

27 September 1944: Luftwaffe support of II. Fallschirmkorps and II. SS-Panzerkorps to eliminate the Allied bridgeheads at Nimwegen and Eindhoven and destroy the forces that had landed between the Waal and the Lower Rhine. In foul weather with frequent rain showers and low-lying cloud cover, 3. Jagddivision flew 231 Einsätze (sorties) over the Arnhem-Nimwegen sector with the main focus being on the Driel-Elst area. At the end of the day, 3. Jagddivision reported 7 victories, 30 aircraft lost, 24 KIA and MIA, and 4 badly wounded. The 3. Jagddivision Bf 109 units flying low-level support for the ground forces in the Driel area were almost certainly III./JG 4, II./JG 27 and I./JG 76.

Keith, it would be helpful if you have a time for that attack if you have something specific in mind.
