Ofw Heinz Arnold's last sortie 16 or 17 April 1945?

Hello,

Manfred Boehme's JG7 book mentions that Ofw Heinz Arnold, the pilot of the NASM Me 262 "Yellow 7", flew his last sortie on 16 April 1945 and that one day later Fritz R.G. Mueller, who took over Arnold's Me 262 after his death, flew to Prague-Rusin and shot down a B-17.

Now, Jurleit and Volume 4 of Classic's Me 262 books mentions 17 April 1945 as the day of Arnold's last sortie. According to Fritz R.G. Mueller he returned back to Alt-Lönnewitz on the day Arnold crashed. So, he couldn't shot down a B-17 near Praque, which apparently happened on the 17 April as well. Jurleit also mentions this contradiction. Could it be that Jurleit and Vol4 were wrong and that it happened in fact on 16 April as stated in Boehme's book (which was published earlier)?

Can anyone tell if it was the 16 April or the 17 April when Arnold crashed?

Thanks,
Roger Gaemperle

Heinz Arnold's Last Sortie

Roger,

In "The Messerschmitt Me 262 Combat Diary," by John Foreman & S.E. Harvey, it is stated under "April 17th, 1945," page 163: "Another pilot reported missing was Oberfeldwebel Heinz Arnold of II/JG7....."

Arnold

Hello Roger,

Arnold´s last flight was already on 14th of April ´45. He crash landed at Grossebersdorf but didn´t survive.

Best wishes, Karl

Hello

@ Tom,

Thank you for the info. That's a confirmation of the April 17 date I found in the two other sources.

@ Karl,

Now, that's new to me. Where did you get this information from? All sources I consulted mentioned either 16th or 17th but never 14th. As far as I know he is still missing today. If he had crash landed he would not be missing..

Best wishes,
Roger

Reaction from Bernd Barbas:
A very long and detailed article about the last flight
of Heinz Arnold came in the Jägerblatt.
There was also a picture of his grave included.
Dont ask me about the issue, but I believe it was last
year.

Mit freundlichen Grüssen / Kind regards

Bernd Barbas

...and a contact of mine in south Wales was selling items belonging to Arnold so I do not know if there was a logbook amongst the items. I can ask....

Hello,

Mr. Barbas is right. See Jägerblatt Nr. 5/2003. Even a photo of Arnold´s grave with the date 14.4.1945 is shown.

Best wishes, Karl
