Supermarine Walrus Factories

Does anyone have details of the factories that built the Walrus in the UK?

Thanks in advance

Larry

As far as I know production started at Hythe and continued in the Itchen Works.
You can probably find out more if you google said places and add Supermarine.

Cheers

Now, a puzzle that members might be able to resolve: The b&w photo below, via the Addlestone Historical Society (AHS), that shows an industrial estate in the area. Members of AHS believe that aircraft completed (or perhaps repaired)at this factory were flown on delivery from a nearby site in the area. The AHS say this was not Brooklands airfield, which is only a mile from Addlestone. So the question now is was there any repair facilities for Walrus aircraft in the area around Brooklands that might help identify the works in the photo?

You may have already spotted this but.....

If you blow the photo up, along the bottom edge there's the top of a line of print. The first two words look like Saunders Roe to me.

Saro built both metal hulled Mk 1's and plywood-hulled Mk 2's. I can't see them having a plant in Addlestone!

It seems I wrote too soon!

I've just checked the Putnam book "Saunders and Saro Aircraft since 1917" by Peter London.

In Appendix 2, the lists the Walrus and Sea Otter production by Saro, then in Appendix 3, there is a list of Saro plants during WW2.

Lo and behold, there are two possibilities listed. One of them is Weybridge Trading Estate, Addlestone. The second is The Chapel, Addlestone Road, Weybridge.

I hope this helps.

Walruses were built at the Weybridge Trading Estate. Completed aircraft were then towed about half a mile alon a track to the flying field at Chertsey Mead
