Hello all

Where is that airfield?

From one of my sources (Polish),on February 15th,1944,four Fw.190 were shot down:
Pilots Shcherbya 1 Fw.190,Savchenko 1 Fw.190,Parada 1 Fw.190,Dronov 1 Fw.190

L.Korniyenko,N.Pashkov and Dronov shot down and crashed.

Someone knows more? German,Soviet units ?

airfield Idritsa Pskov region.

Thanks for your precisions.

According my Polish source,it's good against yak-9.

It seems to be against the 10/JG 54,although only one yak (Karl Brill) was claimed among several Il-2 also claimed.

Maybe someone knows more about these claims and german losses.

Nevyedritza
World War II German spelling: Newedritza.
English spelling: Nevedritsa.
Location: 5 km NE of Idritsa town center and 3 km ENE of where the WWII Idritsa airfield used to be.
Coordinates: 56 21 19 N - 28 57 15 E.

Comment: this tiny village of a half-dozen houses is shown on WWII German military maps but not on present day maps such as Google Earth. There is no mention of an airfield there in any of the German airfield directories and maps for Russia. If it is not just a mistaken reference to Idritsa airfield, which was very busy in February 1944, then there might have been an improvised satellite airstrip at Nevedritsa.

your Polish resource is very similar to the text in the brochure "War in the Air" No. 34, editor S.V. Ivanov, 2001 - "Yak-1/3/7/9 in the Second World War Part 3" (I think that this brochure is a translation from an English-language publication - mistakes of a double translation are possible):
"...The air skirmish of eight Yak-9Ts from the 148th IAP with "Focke-Wulfs", probably belonging to JG54, ended with a score of 8:3. On February 15, 1944, Yak-9T escorted the Il-2 attack aircraft, which attacked the airfield of Nevedrits. The pilots Shcherba and Ordin shot down four fighters, one of them recorded on their accounts: Lutsenko, Savchenko, Parada and Dronov. In their aircrafts crashed I. Karpenko, N. Pashkov and Dronov. ..."

Only this air battle took place on April 28, 1944, and this flight and pilots are very thoroughly in the memoirs:
G.A. Chechelnitsky "Pilots in the War", 1974; Chapter 6 "On the far approaches to the Baltic" (at the end of the chapter).
724 ShAP also suffered losses.

Hello Larry,
S. Sergeev suggests that it had two airfields - mentioned in the memoirs and documents of the 1st Latvian NBAP 313 NBAD in July 1944

In August 1944 the airfield "Newedritsa" was subordinate to 176 BAO (airfield service battalion) 35 RAB (District of Airfield Services) 15 VA.

According to the Luftwaffe summary losses database, JG 54 lost no aircraft damaged or destroyed in air battle on 15 February 1944, only one aircraft of I./JG 54 was "destroyed without enemy action on non-operational flight".

Hi guys

So.....?the date of February 15 is false,and it would be April 28?.....and the losses of 724ShAP?... JG 54 lost aircraft that day?

Thank you Kirill! My guess is that the second airfield or field airstrip at Newedriza (Nevedritsa) was built by the Russians right after they liberated Idritsa, perhaps because the main airfield there had so many bomb craters it could not be used. So it may have been faster and easier to build a new one simply by leveling some ground nearby at Nevedritsa.

Idriza (RUSS) (a.k.a. Idritsa) (ZNr. 10-590) (c. 56 20 N – 28 53 E)
General: field airstrip (Feldflugplatz) in NW Russia 100 km W of Velikiye Luki and 2 km N of Idritsa town center. History: a pre-war Soviet airfield. In German hands, it was used almost exclusively by single-engine fighters, dive bombers, reconnaissance aircraft and night harassment planes. Surface and Dimensions: natural surface measuring approx. 1565 x 1400 meters (1710 x 1530 yards). Infrastructure: no hangars and no barracks but there were numerous civilian buildings off the S and SE boundaries of the airstrip at the N end of Idritsa and around the village of Luzhki. Dispersal: had 7 open aircraft shelters in Jul 44.
Remarks:
15 Jul 41: Idritsa captured by advancing German troops.
27 Feb 44: bombed by 54 Soviet Il-2 ground-attack planes and fighters – claimed 32 aircraft destroyed on the ground out of some 90 seen of the airfield, while 6 more were shot down over the base.
12/13 Jul 44: Idritsa liberated by Soviet forces.
18 Jul 44: aerial photos show the landing area heavily pockmarked with bomb craters.
Aug 44: Soviet wartime documents and postwar memoirs state that there were now 2 airfields at Idriza (Idritsa), the second one at Newedriza (Newedritsa), located 5 km NE of Idritsa town center and 3 km ENE of where the WWII Idritsa airfield used to be. Coordinates: c. 56 21 19 N - 28 57 15 E. The two airfields came under 176 BAO (airfield service battalion) 35 RAB (District of Airfield Services) 15 VA. The 1st Latvian NBAP/313 NBAD was based here in late July and/or early August.

No loss for JG 54 in air battle on 28 April either. Two aircraft lost without enemy action, one in operational flight and the other in non-operational one.

German Fw 190s could be from a SG unit, or claims were overestimated.
