2Lt. Timothy James "Jimmy" HAGGERTY of Rochester, New York

2Lt. Timothy James "Jimmy" HAGGERTY was born on February 21st, 1921 at Rochester, Monroe County, New York.
His Servicenumber was O-718296 and he was a Navigator on board the ship B-17F-100-BO S/N 42-30385 (flown by 2Lt. David T. Kerr) of 352nd Squadron, 301st Bomb Group of 15. USAAF in Italy 1944. His last mission was against the aircraft factory at Wr. Neudorf, Austria on July 26th, 1944. Short before reaching their target german Focke Wulf 190 of JG 300 shot down their B-17. During their spin downwards they hit another B-17 (42-102929 of 1Lt. Ernest F. Howell Jr.) resulting in a loss of 17 men - among them 2Lt. Haggerty. MACR 7000 tells more about this tragedy.
Since this crashplace hast been located and a lot of details about their losses have been revealed it is important to get in contact with his familiy.
If you are a former fellow of 2Lt. Haggerty, you know his familiy or any other details, please leave a message here.
Thank you very much in advance!
Sincerely,

Kurtl

Kurtl -

I was born and raised in Rochester, New York, just before World War II began and lived there off and on until the end of 1974. I suggest you e-mail the local newspaper there - the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle - and see if they can help. It would be worth a try and you never know.

Good luck!

L.

Here is a start on tracking relatives.

His family (as of 1944) is listed here: https://www.fieldsofhonor-database.c...erty-timothy-j

Here is a newspaper article on the death of his father in 1972. Names of the married sisters are included. His brother John P was then in the army. Perhaps a career officer.

2005 - Death of sister Eileen M (Haggerty) Beecher

Note Eileen had a son named Timothy James (with wife Nita) then living in St Louis.

I am not sure you are aware but according "Who Fears ? " page 97 , there was one survivor of
Kerr's aircraft who flew a B17F with an open Radio hatch through which he bailed out
and possibly still alive . I dont have the MACR therefore I cant tell you his name .

In addition to the almost 120 German fighters attacking the formation the fighter
escort did not show up .

This mission was one of the deadliest missions of 301st

Re: 2Lt. Timothy James "Jimmy" HAGGERTY of Rochester, New York

Gentlemen, thank you very much for your support!
I did contact the local Rochester newspaper "The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle" and wrote them two versions for possible publication. Unfortunatly they could not guarantee for publication.

I want to put some special thanks to the member "RSwank"! He did send me some contact data of some possible relatives of 2Lt. Timothy Haggerty. I send them some messages and waiting for response.

The book "Who Fears" is not known by me. Maybe researcher111 could send a copy of page 97 (if it contains any interesting data)?

We are interested to get in contact with ANY of the former crewmembers of both ships. If you want to help us - feel free, we appreciate any support.

Re: 2Lt. Timothy James "Jimmy" HAGGERTY of Rochester, New York

Kurtl,

Wayne W Hammond had a son, Carl LeRoy Hammond who died in 2011.
http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/dai...3918&fhid=4352

Carl had a daughter , Allison (who would be a grand-daughter of Wayne). I can find some possible contact info for her and will PM it to you. At this point you know that none of the crash survivors are still alive and that two of them apparently had no children. I have not checked on whether any of the men killed in the crash had any children, but at this point you are probably going to find that the closest relatives to most of the crewmen are nieces and nephews, most of their brothers and sisters will have also passed on.

Kurtl

I have contacted a relative for you via ancestry.com

If you PM me an email I will endeavour to place you in contact.

If remains have been found have the correct US and foreign government authorities been informed?
