Me 109 Photo identification "2<-" with white fuselage band

Hi,

Can anybody identify the unit and pilot of the Me 109 shown in the attached photo. It seems to me as if the photo was taken in either Italy or North Africa and that is must have been either a Kommandeur's Me 109 or Stab Me 109. There is a small black "2" between the ">".
