Do217 shot down 29 November 1943 Benghazi?
Hi guys
In the SAAF history it mentions that RAF and SAAF Hurricanes engaged six Ju88s (III/LG1) and five Do217s (? 5/KG100) attempting to attack a convoy (GUS 23) off Benghazi, on 29 November 1943. One Ju88 fell to RAF, while SAAF claimed one Ju88 and a probable. Two Ju88s of III/LG1 were lost. But the history goes on to state that one Do217 was also shot down by SAAF. Was one lost, or damaged? Hi Brian
the only Do.217 losses I can spot in November 1943 in the Eastern Med/Aegean are on 15/11/43 when Kalamaki Airfield was attacked and the following aircraft were lost/damaged:- Do.217E-4 (1143) 100% Do.217E-5 (4572) 30% Do.217E-5 (5411) 25% Do.217E-5 (5613) 100% Do.217E-5 (5639) 25% Do.217E-5 (5658) 50% All were 5/KG.100 Also:- Do.217E-5 (5637) 6N+GM of 6/KG.100 FTR from sortie to North Africaan coast on 04/05 October 1943 Do.217E-5 (5507) 6N+FN of 5/KG.100 FTR from sortie to North African coast on 09 October 1943 Cheers Bruce Lander |

Hi Bruce
Thanks for your response. However, I think that you will find the two October losses were for aircraft flying from France against the Middle-Western Med North African coast!Definitely not Egyptian or Libyan targets from Greece. Cheers Brian |

H Brian,
you are correct 5./KG100 was based at Athens/Kalamaki (X. Fliegerkorps), from 24.10.43 to 10.12.43, it's base just prior was Istres. Cheers Bruce Lander |
