Oberfeldwebel Hans Dammers - 23 July 1943

Hello

I have read that Oberfeldwebel Hans Dammers (103 victories, RK, died of wounds 17 March 1944) was serving as an instructor with Jagdgruppe Ost when he suffered a serious accident on 23 July 1943. I have no idea if this incident occurred on the ground or in the air. If the latter happened to be the case, is there any information available in loss list records of the unit? Many thanks.

Horrido!

Leo

Leo, there is this:

Bf 109F-2 6811 Dammer, Ofw. Hans JGr.Ost 23-Jul-43 Injured in crash due to accidently striking the ground. Overturned. Lfl.3/FR Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #11)-Vol.19 Fl.Pl. Laleu 70% H

Not the same pilot, but the date and unit match?

Hi John

I would think that it has to be the same individual as everything matches. Many thanks for the very prompt response!

Wait, don't be that hurry Leo!

From the Kracker list:
Lt. Hans Dammers, 9./JG 52, Bf 109G-6 Wk# 20162 "Yellow 9" (lost 3/13/44), His last victory (113), a LaGG on 13 March, 1944. WIA this same date, when his "Yellow 9" was rammed by a crashing Russian AC and his parachute became entangled with the tail section. He died four days later, 17 March, 1944 from his injuries.

Apparently someone one mixed the two losses.

Regards, Franck.

Why do you write "as everything matches" when in your first post you wrote : "died of wounds 17 March 1944"?
As I said, someone mixed the two losses and took Dammer for Dammers ...

Oberfeldwebel Hans Dammers - 23 July 1943

Hello Franck

Actually the details do match my understanding of his career. He first served with 7./JG 52, then was transferred to JGr Ost as an instructor and finally returned to combat duty with 9./JG 52. Please see the short biography that I have compiled using mainly Obermaier as my source.

I hope this helps clear up any confusion regarding his career. Any comments or corrections are most welcome.

Horrido!

It is the same person, Ofw Hans Dammers. NVM of both crashes exists.

Is there any knowledge as to which Staffel of JGr.Ost Dammers was assigned? That info is missing in the Gen.Qu. loss.
