Bill Crawford Compton's Ju88

On 7 June 1944 WCdr Crawford-Compton shot down a Ju88 but I hadn't seen any links between a LW loss and his claim. This morning, while reading Chris Goss' excellent "Bloody Biscay" he postulates that the aircraft may have been a JU88c-6 from ZG1 (It appears in a post on this forum 12 years ago!).

The possible victim being "Ju 88C-6, 751102, Theiss, Uffz. Günther, , 1.ZG 1" damaged in a fight with Spitfires NW Caen. Has there been any more light shed on this event?

best regards

Keith

8 Ju 88s were lost by ZG 1 and I did not in my book attribute any one loss to any RAF pilot. As I wrote "Allied claims for Ju 88 on this day are considerable but the following could be considered" and then list 12 pilots who between them claimed 9 destroyed, one probable and two damaged

Most probable 751102 was Ju 88 R-2 (BMW 801) as majority around that number were
but others in 750xxx/751xxx ranges were C-6 (Jumo 211 J). Per NVM this was Theiß airplane.

Re: Bill Crawford Compton's Ju88

I made the connection about it being a ZG1 aircraft on the very loose information that Crawford-Compton claimed his Ju88 West of Caen and Theiß was attacked NW Caen. The same conclusion was drawn by Chris Shores and Chris Thomas in 2nd TAF vol.1, page 138. However, as Chris says it could have been any one of the fighters claimed in this combat. The Ju88 crashed south of Carpiquet airfield which also mirrors at least one of the Canadian claims in the same area.

...sorry I wasn't being clear, 2nd TAF identifies the Ju88 as an aircraft of ZG1 not Theiß as the victim.

If K report exists, if POW taken (two injured, one KIA) from this crew.
But do not know if area was liberated yet (think not).
