Re: Hudson torpedo

Hi,

Would anyone know the mark - model number of the standard Torpedo a RAF Hudson would carry in 1941?

Thanks

Danny

RAF Hudsons did not carry torpedoes. The photo is mis-captioned.

Their bombbay is too short for an RN torpedo.

Re: Hudson torpedo

The standard air dropped torpedo during the first half of the war was (according to this) the 18 inch Mark XII.

Of interest, if you look at the section "Vehicles equipped with this weapon", the Hudson is not listed, which seems in-line with Graham's comment.

Re: Hudson torpedo

To drop the torpedo from a monoplane (faster than the earlier biplanes) required an aerodynamic tail addition which both lengthened it and widened it. This led to problems with internal carriage for such types as the Beaufort and Hampden. Similar tails were used on air-dropped torpedoes of all nations in this period, but these were often censored in photographs.
