Helmut Lipfert Book
Upon recommendation of kaki3152, I bought and read Helmut Lifpert's book. Very good reading and insight into the Eastern front air war.
Lipfert mentioned two things that had not occurred to me before in the airwar, nor have I seen any commentaries about such, #1, that he entered aerial combat against Bf-109s that were manned by Rumanians once they changed allegiance to the Allies, and #2, in one encounter, he started chasing a Yak which was circling, when his flight leader joked to him that the Russian pilot had already bailed out and the aircraft was pilotless. |
Re: Helmut Lipfert Book
Hi Tony
Johannes Steinhoff once put in paperwork claiming a Russian fighter, this was questioned as he didn't see it actually crash, so why should they confirm it "well it was a single seater aircraft, the pilot baled-out.......I just assumed it didn't fly itself back to it's base, and land itself" he wrote.......The paterwork then came back 'unconfirmed'. Re: Helmut Lipfert Book
Thanks for the info. I will look into obtaining a copy of the book on the Rumanian Air Force.
