William Sloan DFC
Hi All
I am researching the names on Rossington War Memorial in South Yorkshire -there are two names I am having difficulty with - the first is William Sloan - I would like to know how and where he died - I appreciate 1953 is outside the norm - but I am sure with William winning a DFC - someone just might be able to help. 141361 FLIGHT LIEUTENANT WILLIAM HAROLD NEILSON SLOAN DFC RAF DIED 8 MAY 1953 BURIED OHLSDORF CEMETERY, HAMBURG, GERMANY GRAVE SECTION 12/ROW D/No. 1C HOME TOWN RECORDED AS – SCARBOROUGH, YORKS Thanks John Cowie |
Re: William Sloan DFC
Broken Wings gives an entry for that day which matches where the Sloan is buried.
Tempest T.T. Mk.5 NX151 of APS Sylt, it struck some tree while low flying and is recorded as having climed away and then dived into the ground. The location is given as 4.5 miles south of Oldenburg. APS was Armament Practice Station. His DFC was recorded in the London Gazette on the 10th November 1944, he was with No.208 Sqn, no citation is given. |
