Wieringermeer Airfield 1940
Hi,
Can anyone tell me what units ( reported to be Bf109s) were operational from Wieringermeer during October 1940. TIA Steve |

The ORB entry is vague, but yes the Netherlands is the most likely location. Cheers Steve |
Re: Wieringermeer Airfield 1940
Could it be that no Luftwaffe units were ever stationed at Wieringermeer/Amstel? It was an insignificant landing ground with no facilities, support or services and that tells me that it's doubtful the Luftwaffe would have stationed any air or flying units there. The Dutch appear to have classified it as an ELG for the deployment of units in the event of war and forced evacuation of the main airfields. However, it might have played a brief role as an ALG for a Luftwaffe Jagdteilkommando of a Kette or Schwarm of Bf 109s from time-to-time during 1940-41, although I have seen no proof of that.
See pages 18 and 20 of this splendid work where Wieringermeer is mentioned only twice, but without identifying or confirming any Luftwaffe aircraft that might have used it for a day or two in 1940-41: Grimm, Peter, Erwin van Loo and Rolf de Winter. Vliegvelden in Oorlogstijd: Nederlandse vliegvelden tijdens besetting en bevrijding 1940-1945 (Airfields in Wartime: Dutch Airfields from Occupation to Liberation 1940-1945). Amsterdam: Boom, 2009. ISBN: 978 90 8506 8235. Oversize Hb. 512p. Profusely illus. (incl. color). Numerous maps (incl color). Numerous sketches (incl. color). Source notes. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. L. |
Re: Wieringermeer Airfield 1940
The a/f is called "Middenmeer" and is in the Wieringermeer (a polder reclaimed in 30's).

Thank you for clarification. The name Wieringermeer was recorded in the ORB. Now that the airfield is confirmed as Middenmeer, can anyone confirm what Bf109's units were stationed there in October 1940. TIA Steve |
Re: Wieringermeer Airfield 1940
According to British Air Ministry A.I.2(b) map Holland - Airfields and Seaplane Bases dated 31.12.42, Wieringermeer/Amstel and Middenmeer were two separate landing grounds, one almost next to the other, and both identified as "Decoy A/D" (meaning dummy airdromes). This is confirmed in British Air Ministry A.I.2(b) map Holland - Airfields and Seaplane Bases dated Apr '44. My previous cited source by Grimm, van Loo and de Winter also shows Wieringermeer and Middenmeer as two separate entities.
So this suggests that the "ORB" is correct. L. |
Re: Wieringermeer Airfield 1940
Wieringermeer/Amstel could have been Amstelmeer. A bay near the van Ewijcksluis on north-west side of the Wieringermeer.
This could have been a seaplane location for the Kriegsmarine station Den Helder. It is the first time I have seen this mentioned. De Kooy airfield is 3-4 km. north of this location. There were two auxiliary airfields in the Wieringermeer for the Dutch Air Force. Only one of the two auxiliary airfields in the Wieringermeer has been used in May 1940 by the Dutch Air Force. Jaap |
Re: Wieringermeer Airfield 1940
It would appear that if an ALG, none were based there
