Abgestürtzten Dornier Do-17: Werknr 2640 gefunden!
 

The last few years we have found hundreds of wreckage pieces of a Dornier Do-17 that crashed near Kesselt (to the west of Maastricht). Yesterday we finally found the Werknr.: 2640

Can anyone tell us when the plane crashed, who were the crewmembers and what happened to them?

Seit verschiedene Jahre haben wir schon hunderte Bruchstücke eines
abgestürtzten Dornier Do-17 gefunden in der Nähe von Kesselt (westlich von Maastricht).
Gestern fanden wir endlich die Werknr.: 2640

Wer kann uns sagen wann der Absturz stattgefunden hat, wer die Besatzung war und was mit diese Leute passiert ist?

A Do17z, but between mai nd august 40 some dozens hv felt down a bit everywhere, if you want to spent some hours to sort them I could send you the "nominated"

Hello Manfredstachel,
Having looked at my records, i believe this W.Nr 2640 is for a Do17Z-3
model. I have checked losses for Kampfgeschwader 2, 3, 76, 77 but i haven't found a loss for this a/c.
Its quite likely this a/c may have been lost during the French Campaign May to June 1940, before the W.Nr or unit codes were logged on the loss sheets!

We also suspect the plane to have crashed sometime in may 1940.

Werk Nummern not recorded at that time, but RT has pointed me to losses in my records for 10 May 1940 that look promising:

4./KG77 Dornier Do17Z. Returned damaged by ground fire near Veldwezelt. Fw G. Dittrich died of wounds, rest of crew unhurt. Aircraft repairable.

5./KG77 Dornier Do17Z. Returned damaged by ground fire near Kesselt. Gefr K. Wellhausen died of wounds, rest of crew unhurt. Aircraft repairable.

5./KG77 Dornier Do17Z. Crashed near Vroenhoven reportedly shot down by flak but possibly attacked by Fiat CR42s of II/2 flown by Sgt J. Maes and S/Lt J. Offenberg 6.30 a.m. Oberlt H. Bott, Lt R. Weiss, Fw A. Baumgartner, and Oberfw H. Spohr killed. Aircraft a write-off.

6./KG77 Dornier Do17Z. Returned damaged by ground fire near Eben Emael. Uffz J. Stratmann slightly wounded. Aircraft repairable.
