Do 217N-2 3C + IP

I have information that the above-mentioned nightfighter accidentally (?) landed in Switzerland and was confiscated subsequently.

Is there any comprehensive info about this plane and especially about the camouflage. Several variants of this plane are available, not distinguishing between N-1 and N-2 variants and showing two different upperwing patterns.

According to the usual Swiss thoroughness there must exist descriptions and photographs. Deoes anybody have infos or is there any info in the web? Iasked the same question at the LEMB forums.

Thx in advance...

Regards

I found this one:

Do 217 N-2, Werknr. 1570, 3C+IP, 6./NJG 4 landing in Basel/Birsfelden on 02.05.44.

The reason was: "...beim Verlegungsflug durch Seitenwind vom Kurs abgekommen, Treibstoffmangel".

The book "Deutsche Luftwaffe ueber der Schweiz 1939-1945" by Karl Ries, notes that the a/c camouflage was in the standard night fighter colours, "grays 74 and 75 on its upper, and whitish gray 76 on its lower surfaces." The a/c had either the FuG 212 (German narrative) or FuG 202 (English narrative) radar -- no big deal since their antennas were identical, and the FuG 227 passive homing on the wingtips. The picture below is from that superb book, page 67.

the aircraft was based at Taveaux, France, in may 1944.
It was piloted by Fw Günter Konzac - 6./NJG 4.
Other peculiarities of the machine was:
- 4 x MG151 in Schräge Musik arrangement in fuselage
- two whip antennas left and right of the nose
- combat parachute in the tail

Re: Do 217N-2 3C + IP

Thx guys for the details!

Interesting for me would be the upperwing camouflage - is it a splinter camouflage like originally suggested by the RLM for the 217N or a mottled variant similar to other N/Fs.

Some sources mention a partially black right wing - the photos don´t show further details...?

Cheers

hi,
i think the wings are painted over with black. a the front side it is very weathered looking and there can the old 76 be ssen.
there are also picture available which shows the machine in swiss markings together with a bf 110 and a phote from front to back in front of a hangar.
regards
jim
