Could anyone help me with the markings on Bretschneider's " Red 1" Rauhbautz VII. Was the lower cowl red or yellow? Was the spinner red and white or red and black. I have noticed modelers are now making the lower cowl yellow and the spinner black and white. Is there any new evidence to have changed from the markings of the red cowl and red and white spinner? thanks Bob

I certainly am not an expert on interpreting old black and white photographs with all the subtleties that arise from the orthochromatic type film generally used but most profiles nowadays, such as those by respected artist Claes Sundin, show the under cowling to be yellow and the spinner as white and black. Here is a rather poor quality scan in which the light colored under cowl as compared to the red RV fuselage band shows well (Windows XP Scanner and Camera Wizard is not the best scanner software). I hope this helps you.

Greetings Artist, The undercowling was NOT yellow... and the spinner was for sure Black with white spiral. If the rules were being obeyed, then there was no yellow cowling panel because they'd been abolished in June/July 1944. But that's a big "if" of course…

Leo, I know every program is a bit different, but usually scanning software has some type of descreening filter and other sometimes unfathomable settings. I've found on the 3 or 4 different scanners I've had over the years that usually if I do a scan on the default settings I'll end up with an image with lines, such as yours, or cross-hatching. You may well be aware of this stuff, but in the vein of trying to be helpful....

Many thanks for your advice. I did look to see if there were any Options or Preferences but on the wizard there do not appear to be any. I do have to admit that when I was using Windows Me I used the software that came bundled with the scanner and the results were always very good. Last year when I finally got Windows XP I noticed that it came with this wizard so I decided to use it instead since I only use the scanner once in a blue moon. The results have been less than satisfactory but maybe batting around on Photoshop I can improve these images. Many thanks for your help and I will try looking for that CD.

...using Paintshop Pro, there is a fuction under Enhance Photo called Moire Pattern Removal, and by using this on your image, the results can be seen below. If ever I scan a b/w image, I scan it far bigger than I want, use this facility and then reduce the image to the size I require...

Hello Peter

I checked out several online guides on how to remove moire patterns and this can be done on Photoshop through either the Despeckle or Gaussian Blur filters. I tried these on my original image and came out with results very much like yours. Many thanks to you and Jim for your help in fixing my lousy scans!

Or there is another option I use...
You have to scan in higher resolution, lest say 600 dpi. Then when you resize in any graphic modulating program, the lines will disappear. Also option of using Gaussian blur/filter on high res image does not lower down the quality in such a scale as on the small one (as can be seen on blurred but stripe less image posted above)
