Bf 109G-6 with Americans ?

1 Attachment(s)
I found the atteched profile of a rumanian Bf 109G-6 on a russian site. Now I have some questions:
With this a/c a rumanian pilot brought lt.col. Gunn to Italy. Some sources say it´s Werknummer was 66 130. In the profile you can see 166 139 (?). Was the real Werknummer of 66 130 possibly 166 130? I also have a drawing with Werknummer 166 133.
Which data is correct. Any help will be welcome.
PS: Did US use other Bf 109´s? Are there any profiles, fotos or so?
Thanks
Thomas

Re: Bf 109G-6 with Americans ?

Hi Thomas,
A photo confirms W.Nr. 166133. Eight photos of this Bf 109 is published in "Captured Me 109s" by J. Jackiewicz & M.Wawrzynski, 2007, available from web book stores now.

The three-view colour profile in this book has a blue tail band and upper part of rudder, contrary to the green in the profile you posted.
The authurs claim that after analyzing the b/w photos and comparing shades with the painted US flag on the fuselage, they concluded it was a dark blue identical to the blue used in painting the flag.

The above mentioned book is worth getting if you are interested in Captured 109s. (See also my review over at LEMB board for more info on this book.)

The Werknummer was indeed 166133.
As I've mentioned in the pertinent thread in the books section, this was NOT a captured aircraft, but rather an aircraft in regular ARR service, in diplomatic mission to Italy.

Hallo, F19Gadiator,
thanks for quick answer.
If I understand you right, WNr. 66 130 and 166 139 are wrong, so I can erase the profiles and datas from my database.
Was 166 133 the only Bf 109 used by US? Can you post a list of others?
I´m trying to clear up a number of unidentified Bf 109 profiles on my PC, I will ask the forum now and then for help.
But now, thanks again for your help.
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
1.
Denes is right! - This is not a captured Bf 109.
2.
I would like to help but I unfortunately have no time right now......

If you are into captured Bf109s I can recomend you to buy the book I refer to, as it will answer your G-6 questions and more!;)

We are closing for the night now in Asia.....Over and out.

Re: Bf 109G-6 with Americans ?

Hi Thomas

The Bf 109 was Roumanian and flown all the way from Roumania to Italy by the pilot 'Bazu' Cantacuzino, the leading ace of the ARR (Roumanian Air Force). He was attempting to bring details of a peace overture from the Roumanians to the Western Allies. Basically the Bf 109 was plastereed with Stars and Stripes so that he wouldn't get shot down in the process!

If you want to know more go to this titally brilliant site and type in Bazu or Cantacuzino in the search engine and you'll undoutably find more:

Hi Thomas

No the USAAF did use any captured Bf 109's in combat, although they did capture quite a number

Re: Bf 109G-6 with Americans ?

I didn´t know, that this flight was a "diplomatic" mission, very interesting.
Thanks to all who answered to my question, especially ChrisS for the list of captured planes. It will take some time to work all this to my database.
The site over rumanian airforce I knew, but my problem was, that I knew the pics of the a/c with US flag You posted and then I found that profile with same colours and another WNr. And just one more WNr. with a similiar profile. That´s why I was a little confused. Now I think, I see a little bit more clear to it.
One new question: Did there existe a WNr. 66 130? I don´t have any WNr. nearby.
Thanks again, hope I can help some day too.
Thomas
