How many luftwaffe fighter pilots ?

Hello gentlemen,
I was wondering if the current studies have determined (approx ...) how many fighter pilots served in the Luftwaffe during WW2. I mean JG & ZG pilots, even SG, because these last units have provided great aces (Lambert, Buchner, for instance). I have the - mad or stupid ?- project, one day (in the following 30 years, be cautious ...) to gather all info available on every pilot, and publish (book, Web ?) a kind of anthology. (I'm young, still have stupid ideas).
Could somebody help ?

Best regards and many thanks to the "team" who did an outstanding job !
Philippe

How Many Luftwaffe Fighter Pilots?

Hello Philippe

Unfortunately I do not know the number of Luftwaffe fighter pilots that served but according to the Gemeinschaft der Jagdflieger in regards to day fighter pilots a total of 8,500 were killed, 2,700 were listed as missing or prisoner of war and 9,100 were injured. Please note that these are totals for day fighter pilots only and do not include night fighter pilots nor ground attack pilots. I hope that this information helps you for what it is worth.

Horrido!

Hi to all!

According to the Walter A. Musciano, Messerschmitt Aces, TAB Books, 1989, in page 192 wrote the same digits as in previous message. I can only add, from the same book, these sentence: 'Of the 28,000 men who trained as fighter pilots in the Jagdwaffe, less than 1,400 survived the war, and the road back was an unpleasant experience for these heroes.'

Kind regards
