I.ZG 76 code

Hi all,

I am looking for code or marking that has been used by I. Gruppe ZG 76. If there are time differences, I am interested in April 1944-1945 era.
Thanks for any help

Re: I.ZG 76 code

Hi, Peter...

According to Barry Rosch's Luftwaffe codes, markings & units 1939-45 (Schiffer Military History), Zerstörergeschwader 76 reformed for the second time in August 1943 and disbanded in February 1945. During this time, the Geschwader I/D code would have been '2N', although late in 1943 and into early 1944, the unit apparently used coloured numbers to identify aircraft in a manner similar to Jagdgruppen machines.

Re: I.ZG 76 code

according to looses listing of III./ZG 76 the code 2N was used in 1940-41 and then changed to M8 and used through the whole ZG 76.

ZG 1 gave away the S9 code and absorbed the 2N in the fall of 1943 onward

Re: I.ZG 76 code

ZG 76 in 1944/45 = M8

Day fighter Bf 110 G-2s in 1944 with ZG 1 = 2N

Re: I.ZG 76 code

Gentlemen...

I am the first to admit that others possess more knowledge and information on these matters than myself, but I am getting a little confused... .

As per the publication mentioned in my earlier posting, page 382 clearly shows two Bf110G-2s credited with carrying the codes 2N+DM and 2N+EM, both of which are attributed to 4.Staffel/ZG76. The code '2N' is clearly attributed on that page to ZG76 during its second formation (Aug '43 - Feb '45), and not ZG1. Page 383 shows two further machines credited with the codes 2N+BP and 2N+XP, from 6.Staffel/ZG76. By 'day fighters', I presume we are referring to Pulk Zerstörer machines, armed to the teeth and assigned to attack and break up large daytime formations of bombers over German-held territory and Germany itself, by means of Wrf.Gr.21 rocket missiles, heavy cannon et al.

However, to return to Peter's original query, I have also seen a photo of an Me410B-2/R2, coded M8+2 and attributed to I.Gruppe/ZG76 based in Czechoslovakia during late 1944 (Messerschmitt Me210/410 in action; Squadron/Signal Publications). So, are we actually saying that there was a definite period when one code stopped being used and the other was introduced, or was there an overlap of codes being used by different units at the same time, or different sections of the same unit at different times...? Am I missing something very obvious here...?

Yours in confusion... !:piliot:

Re: I.ZG 76 code

the Bf 110G-2 codes you quoted are from II./ZG 1 not ZG 76. John just reaffirms what I have mentioned earlier and in fact I have the loss of 2N+BP

you book is incorrect.

Re: I.ZG 76 code

2N+ was last used by III./ZG 76 in early 1941, before it was ultimately absorbed into the various elements of JG 77/JG 5. Check out Eric Mombeek's 'Eismeerjäger Band 1'.

S9+ was used by Erprobungsgruppe 210/Schnellkampfgeschwader 210/Zerstörergeschwader 1, the lineage of those units from July 1940, until ZG 1's code was changed to 2N+. First record of 2N+ being used by ZG 1 was in the loss/damage report for 8th November 1942, a Me 210 A-1 coded 2N+AT, 25% damaged.

The attribution of 2N+ to ZG 76 is an error going back decades to misidentification in several books.

Barry Rosch's book is a monumental tome, but it does contain errors, particularly with regard to Bf 110s.

Hi ODBL and all others ...

Fir to that black 2 published in squadron..on left photo it says that it is I. Gruppe plane, however on the right photo it is II. Gruppe plane...as for the redbrown parts of the spinner I assume it is II gruppe..and has been wrongly labeled on the picture... As far as I know and correct me if otherwaysm II gruppe had first part ppop hubs with spiral and second part redbron, while I gruppe had all black with spiral all the hub.

The reason why I asked is that I came to Flugbuch info of a pilot, that flew I. ZG 76. Some a/c he noted as marked with numbers but in some entries he wrote letters instead of numbers...and s I thought if I Gruppe did nto use also alphabetical marking together with numerical...
So Far I did not see much photos of I. Gruppe ZG 76 me 410s....anyone can help with these???

And funny fact is that also ErgZG 76 used 1E code, which was designated for Erg.ZG 1? could it be?

THANKS and regards
