JG 1 He 162 with long red arrow
 

Hello,

Today, I have received an interesting photo of a He 162 on display in the US shortly after the war.

Interestingly, it seems that the red arrow on the nose is extended over the whole fuselage. This could have been original German design or applied in the USA, but still, I haven't seen any He 162 photo yet that shows this.

Please note the white swastika. Can anyone identify this particular He 162? Have you seen this one before?

The full length arrow was in yellow not red. The whole paint scheme was strictly US-applied. See page 319 to "Jet Planes of the Third Reich" for a color photo of this Heinkel. The authors claim it was W.Nr. 120067, but Phil Butler's "War Prises" shows that it might have been W.Nr. 120017 (FE-494).

Thanks a lot! Interesting, I haven't seen this He 162 with yellow arrow before. I don't own the "Jet Planes of the Third Reich" (if anybody has the time and doesn't mind, it would be nice to see a scan).

Both 120067 and 120017 had an outlined swastika. But it can of course be that the white swastika was also US-applied. I thought I have seen a color photo of a He 162 White 7 (I can't recall the number, might be a different number) that had white swastikas. The photo was taken - I think - at an exhibition at Wright Field and was published e.g. in an old Jet & Prop magazine .
