FW-190 ID Help

I'm looking for info on the pictured FW-190. Standing by her is my friend Lt Dixon Van Ausdell of the 308th FS 31st FG. Van remembers the photo was taken in late 43 around Pomigliano, Italy. Thanks for the help.

Really obliging of Lt van Dixon to stand so that he was not on the way of any of the markings!

Just a stupid question:
Isn't it possible that it is DN+FW ???

Thank you for the responses. I believe it it a W and not a V. These codes are not standard unit markings are they??
Van has been a very good friend for many years. He flew Spit Mk Vb HL+O, Spit Mk VIII HL+Q and P-51B HL+Q and made claims for 2 FW-190s
(1 destroyed and 1 damaged) in May 1944.

Hi Jack !

What would be the difference in the type of aircraft, marked DN+FV or DN+FW ?

By my understanding of writing German letters, it is almost cleary, that DN+FV is visible here on the photo on this particular aircraft.

But my question is to find out, clearly, if DN + FW was ever issued to a German FW-190 unit in Italy, at around 1943 ?.

Thanks a lot,

Horst Weber

Re: FW-190 ID Help

We have DN+FW listed on the LEMB Sktz Database as a Fw190G-3 WNr.160023. I would however agree that given the size/spacing of the previous three letters before the last, the fine example above looks DN+FV.

Kind regards

Well. it's claearly a V or a W. There's some shadowing there but it's awful straight. Over to the folks with better vision than myself.

Definitely still looks like a V to me Jack as if it were a W, it would be wider than the previous three letters...

Re: FW-190 ID Help

Given time, I may be able to turn this one up in the Air Intelligence lists of captured and abandoned aircraft in Italy and Sicily (there were a lot of those) and that would probably include the Stammkennzeichen.
