He 59 shot down by Ginger Lacey

Perhaps someone familiar with Luftwaffe Maritime Units based in Cherbourg can help with this query?

On 17th July 1941 Ginger Lacey was credited with shooting down a He 59 off the south coast of England.

Can anyone confirm the identity of the He59 and or the unit to which it belonged?

Thanks in advance

Larry

Larry: I have seen your plea on this all over the place. A quick check on this finds nothing but from what I recall, it was Seenotflugstaffel Cherbourg; there are more knowledgeable guys on this forum who will confirm or deny this

Re: He 59 shot down by Ginger Lacey

Sorry, but no Heinkel He 59 or similar aircraft, was reported lost or damaged on or around this date (17.07.1941). I have this from several sources. The only seaplane lost on this date was an Arado Ar 95A-5 that was shot down in combat with Soviet I-16 fighters in the Eastern Baltics. However, it was not unusual that seaplanes were apparently shot down as observed from a fighter aircraft, but in many cases these planes landed safely on the sea and then being towed ashore by rescue boats.

Thanks guys

Obviously Ginger Lacey had this included in his score and it's mentioned on a few sites concerning his RAF career and recorded I believe in the ORB for his Squadron as 'confirmed'.

Possibly the loss was not recorded till a few days later, as happens sometimes.
