Spitfire MkVb s/n en821
Help! 24 or 30 inch codes?
|
Re: Spitfire MkVb s/n en821
Unit? Date? Then perhaps we could track down similar examples. But off the top of my head I'd say 30 inch, thinking that the 24 inch were generally later. If that's the only choice.

243 Sqn, between Sept and Dec 1942.
Sqn was in the UK until transfering to Algeria in Dec. Side codes are in sky. SN M. |
Re: Spitfire MkVb s/n en821
There is a photo in Fighter Squadrons of the Royal Air Force, page 345. The code letters are only slightly smaller than the roundel, so I suggest 30in. They begin just below the cockpit rail, and the width of the lower letter overlaps the wing fairing.
This aircraft has the pipe from the rear of the exhaust into the fuselage, for cockpit heating I believe. |

Dang, nice photo! Wish I had that a month ago...
yuk yuk yuk. Story of my life.... I build it and then get the low down! This forum should prevent that happening again. Thanks again for all the help. Cheers! John |
