Abbreviation "Zümo" and the Jumo 004?
 

Hi all...

Have any of you come across the abbreviation "Zümo" in connection with Jumo 004's (or aero-engines in general for that matter)? The abbreviation is mentioned in a Rechlin weekly report for September 1944. We think that Zümo = "Zentral Überprüfungsstelle für Motoren" but we'd be interested to know where it was located or any other information for that matter. Any pointers with sources would be very much appreciated...

Maybe I'm totally wrong, but are you sure "Zümo" means Ueberprüfungsstelle? I was thinking along the lines of Jumo = Junkers Motor, so how about Zümo = Zündapp Motor?!

Zündapp actually did build engines for a/c, like the Z 92, a four cylinder in-line engine, I believe it produced some 50 hp, anyway. a lightweight engine.

It was used in different a/c types, like Kl 105, Go 150, Bü 180, Si 202B and Fi 253 "Spatz". Was even tried in an early helicopter, the Doblhoff WNF 342 V1.

Well, anyway, just a thought...!

If there's a Jumo 004 connection, is it relevant that Zündapp built motorcycles (2-stroke motors)? For instance might they have manufactured Riedel starter motors under licence - or even motors for the Kettenkrad tractors that towed the jets?

We have so little detail on the Zümo facility other than some Jumo 004's were to be sent there. Do you (or anybody else) have a location for Zündapp circa 1944/45 and do we know if they were involved in any way with Jumo 004 maintenance/inspection etc?

In connection with Hans reply I noted that on p.10 in the book "German Secret Flight Test Centres to 1945" by Beauvais/Kössler/Mayer/Regel, 2002, Midland, that RLM issued mostly two-letter prefixes as design or manufacturer codes, also for engines:
Example
Argus = As
Zündapp = Z
Siemens = Sh

...consequently "Zümo" seems a bit too long to fit in?

On the other hand there were exceptions such as:

Junkers = Jumo
Brandenburgische Motorenwerke = Bramo
Bayerische Motorenwerke = BMW

If "Zümo" was used for Zündapp I would also expect it to be listed this way, and not as "Z" - But that is only an assumption.

It’s interesting to read the speculations of all the “experts”: Zündapp etc.:D

Zümo is a designation of the BMW plant at Zühlsdorf.
The HQ of the development and manufacturing of the BMW 003 was at Spandau (Berlin), and in 1943 the plant was partially tranferred to Zühlsdorf.
There is no connection to Jumo but to BMW.

It appears that my assumption that the engines mentioned in the Rechlin weekly report were Jumo 004's could indeed have been wrong and given the project they were intended to be used on, they may well have been BMW 003's. Thanks for the detailed response Peter
