RAF 323 Squadron in 1940 in the Mediterranean?
Whilst researching the losses of the RAF, the RAAF, the RCAF, the RNZAF and the SAAF in May and June 1940 I came upon Sergeant Bernard Poskitt (RAF 522475) who went - according to the CWGC - missing somewhere in the Mediterranean on 30/06/1940. His unit is listed as 323 Squadron.
But I doubt if this unit existed in 1940. Can anybody help me out? |
Re: RAF 323 Squadron in 1940 in the Mediterranean?
Wrong squadron.
30 June 1940. 223 Squadron. Wellesley I. L2654 Op: Massawa. Crew. Sgt. B. Poskitt + LAC. L P. Jebb + Took off 0435 hrs, Summit, one of five aircraft detailed to bomb Massawa. The formation was attacked by one CR.32 and two CR.42 fighters, which probably shot this aircraft down. Both are commemorated on the Alamein Memorial. RAF Bomber Losses in the Middle East and Mediterranean Vol I. Gunby - Temple. Regards Peter. |

Thanks! - I was already wondering who could be the other crew member of that plane of 223 Squadron.
