Seeking ID of "White 12" of 1./JG27 SD @5.40 Poss Belgium 5.40

Hello,

A number of us are working very closely with Peter Cornwell trying to match photos for German losses in the west with his newly published loss list, especially during the difficult May-June, 1940 period. We've gone as far as we can with photos we have of a shot up "White 12" of 1./JG27, that force landed during this period. The plane was shot up from behind by rifle-caliber bullets and made a good forced-landing. By a process of elimination and other factors we think that "White 12" probably matches with this modified entry:

"May 23, 1940

1./JG27 Messerschmitt Bf109E-3. Shot down in combat with Spitfires of No. 92 Squadron between Boulogne and Dunkirk, Nord Pas-de-Calais, France, at 11.30 a.m. Possibly that claimed by F/Lt Tuck. Oberfeldwebel Werner Ahrens captured. Aircraft a 100% write-off."

One of three photos I have of this a/c has a hand-written caption on the back that indicates that it came down in Belgium. The Belgian border is only about six miles up the coast from Dunkirk, so this is not out of the question. However, we know that a caption on the back of a photo is not necessarily a fact. By chance does anyone know anything about the crash of Ahrends, or have additional photos or evidence about where this plane specifically came down?

We are gradually working through the entire Luftwaffe section of the new FC book, so I will probably have many more such questions.

Thanx,
