Thomas B. Roll 8th AF USAAF info please

Hi,

I know he was in the USAAF, received distinguished unit citation, DFC, AM and was in the 8th AF. I know he also had an air accident as his name appears on the roll for crashes. Does anybody have any more information group/squadron/plane?

Thanks,

Tod

what I have found:

ARMY SERIAL NUMBER 16039084
RESIDENCE: STATE MICHIGAN
RESIDENCE: COUNTY WASHTENAW
PLACE OF ENLISTMENT DETROIT MICHIGAN
DATE OF ENLISTMENT aug 16, 1941
as Aviation Cadet
born 1917
personal file listed under box 0210, reel number 2.67#
this says NARA database...but Social security index list different person (born in 1916)

crash
1943-07-24 ROLL, THOMAS B , plane B-24D 41-25737, accident BIRCHAM, NEWTON, UK 93
this says the accident reports web page...but the serial is not a B-24 serial.!!
Between 1939 and 45, the station BIRCHAM, NEWTON was used for convoy protection, reconnaissance, anti-shipping and U-Boat patrols.

hope this is him ant that this helps a bit.

Try B-24D 41-23737 instead. Source:

On named site it says as pilot "Rell, Thomas B." Must be a typo.

thanks then the unit is
328BS 98BG, 8AF
but it is strange as 98 was as follows:
The 98th was initially assigned to the USMEAF (United States Middle East Air Force). However, the USMEAF was dissolved on November 12, 1942. At that time, the 98th came under the 9th Air Force. The 98th was under the command of the 12th Air Force in September and October 1943. Then, it was under the 15th Air Force beginning on 1 November 1943.

Re: Thomas B. Roll 8th AF USAAF info please

Peter,

Just google "41-23737 B-24" and you'll find easy enough that this a/c was with 93rd BG, later passed on to 446th BG.

So, 98th BG is also a typo...
