A mystery of my own.....

Hi guys,

I have a photograph made circa August 1944, of a destroyed Luftwaffe hanger located in France, I assume that demolition was carried out by the Germans themselves? The contents are various captured Spitfires and Typhoons which appear to be for examination purposes etc.

There is one Typhoon serial evident JP845. out of pure interest, does anyone have the usual info on this one please ? (I don't have a thing on Typhoons)

Hi Mervyn,

According to the excellent book "The Typhoon & Tempest Story" by Chris Thomas, this aircraft was shot down on 21/12/1943 near Abbeville (F). It was SA-H from 486 Sqn and the pilot, F/Sgt Helean, evaded capture.

Re: A mystery of my own.....

Thanks for the kind remark re the book. Yes, I believe the Typhoon is SA-H, JP845. In front of it is US-K, JP915, shot down by flak near Foret de Hesdin,3 Jan 44, Flg Off S.M.McGregor PoW. Behind is another Typhoon, 'Y', which may well be FM-Y, JP510, engine failure 16 March 44, f/l 8miles SE Fecamp, Plt Off J.B.Wood PoW. There is also a Spit XII, DL-E or F, EN??? in the photo I have (in Pictorial History of the RAF, Taylor & Moyes, Ian Allan). If you have an original please drop me a PM I have been trying to track one down for years!
