Sonderstaffel Kaatsch

Tonight I've posted an expanded version of this article on my website, adding two more pages of narrative, including several Bf 109 Werk Nummern from this unit and from 5.(F)/123.

The story now runs from 18 August – 5 October 1944.

The next thing I plan is to add a timeline relating the events in the story to the development of the war in Eastern France.

Re: Sonderstaffel Kaatsch

I've just added some additional details to this article on my website:
  • Major Kaatsch's next assignment
  • Uffz. Geisser's transfer from 5.(F)/123
  • The markings and disposal of Bf 109 G-6 WNr. 412169 of 5.(F)/123
The story now runs from 18 August – 17 October 1944.

Hello Nick,

always a delight to read your findings. The Lt Bell mentioned must have been Lt Kurt Bell, who changed to 15./JG54, where he shot down a P-38 on 17th. Dec. 44.

Best wishes, Karl

I've just uploaded extensive revisions and additions to this article on my website including a new appendix of known aircraft (five of them detached from other Staffeln) and the names of another three pilots who served with the unit. To give some context, here's also a timeline of events in the ground war.

Not according to the General Quartiermeister 6. Abt. loss report which says that 142098 was the aircraft of Erdmann and Marth (and that it was a total loss).

I also have a copy of the (fire-damaged) Personal Verlustmeldung for Kögel and there is a handwritten addition "Ju 87 142098". However the next name on the page is Erdmann and there is no aircraft information for him, so I wonder if they wrote the Werk Nummer against the wrong name?

If Kögel landed in Koblenz, it is interesting that he died in Dorsten on 10 March from the wounds he received on 24 February: Dorsten is 200 km from Koblenz.

You are right

There where I found this Wn too + his companion uffz Schröder unwounded, other possiblity as those men seemed not able to sleep at night, time to time they flew more than one mission, the plane would be later used by Erdmann

If Kögel landed in Koblenz, it is interesting that he died in Dorsten on 10 March from the wounds he received on 24 February: Dorsten is 200 km from Koblenz.

He has been hit near Koblenz where he suffered his wound

That's interesting. Do you know which unit he was flying with at that time?
