Kapitan Ivanov, KIA 2.3.44

He was allegedly killed on 2.3.1944 after a DF with a Fw190, having flown a Yak9. This happened in the Crimea. Maybe he was from 265.IAD (??), as this unit flew a big sortie on that day.

Question:
- Does anyone have soviet sources on this person / can anyone confirm this?

Hello Yogibar!
I do know you are quite a specialist on the Eastern Front, a "crazy" and bit confused airwar - compared to the Med or Reich Defense..May I ask you IF you managed to find out the Luftwaffe pilot who claimed this Russian airman? Just for curiosity...
I am sure people like Bernád and other Easter Front specialists will help you to find out about this Russian pilot.
Yours ( with curiosity about the LW side of the combat )
Adriano

A potential candidate could be Ofw. Hermann Buchner of 6./SG 2, who claimed that day a Yak-9 in air combat fought at 300 m, at 09:40, in Pl. Qu. 46 364. Where that location is I cannot tell.

Hi all!

yogybär:

From where do You got this information? No pilots name, no regiment?

Re: Kapitan Ivanov, KIA 2.3.44

I have the initial information from Buchner Memoirs, concerning the dogfight and the data on his victim. As they have all this data about the victim (his look, name, planetype etc) I think the claim is 100% true. That Kapitan Ivanov had already 350 flights, so he should have been "someone"...

Additionally, I know from the (very good!) "Dragons..."-book on 812.IAP that on exactly that day, the whole 265.IAD attacked a german AF which they called "Rayzendorf", which is ca. here: N45°33'37", E34°17'17" and which is in the area where II./SG2 was based. But 812.IAP did not claim any Fw destroyed on the ground, neither file any losses. So maybe even the whole 3.IAK attacked crimean Luftwaffe airfields on that day? Some other unit must have lost that Kapitan Ivanov...

BTW: 812.IAP claimed Ju87s destroyed on the ground (potentially from III./SG3) as well as others, but no Fw190. Maybe there were several AFs in the area of "Karankut", which is near to the '44 northern front of the Crimea? Also mentioned by 812.IAP are two kills of 109's during take-off, while II./JG52 filed a "take-off accident" with two Messerschmitts lost and one pilot killed (but filed on antother AF).

No Kapitan Ivanov so far. Leytenant Ivanov from 402 IAP/265 IAD lost his life in the air combat in Crimea, but on May 5, 1944. Possibly a victim of Lipfert or either Hartmann...

Hello!

It could be grid 34 Ost 46 364 which is at Crimea, see attached picture (center of the grid shown as a red star).

I used the LUMA at the Gyges site ( http://www.gyges.dk ) in finding the grid. It includes also automatic map feature, which is how I got the map shown here.

Re: Kapitan Ivanov, KIA 2.3.44

Nikita: Some more details from Buchner: A group of ca. 10 Yaks attacked their AF successfull. Only one lagged behind and Buchner shot that one down after a "10 minutes"-dogfight. The pilot was found, this "Kapitan Ivanov": blond guy, "czarist" shoulder-pieces on uniform (Guards unit?), his papers indicating 350 missions flown. The shot down plane was identified as Yak-9.
It is possible that Buchner confuses something, but at least the date and type of the claim are documented in his logbook. He also claimed a Yak in the Crimea in May1944. But I doubt that in these days the Germans had time for checking out a shot-down plane...

Kari: Yes, that is the area where the kill was claimed, near a Luftwaffe-AF at "Karankut" (german naming). Thx for the link to that tool, it seems to be fantastic!
