Nice photo of a MkI Hurricane

Is its code SO or SD? Looks like SO of 145 Sqn.

Can see no loses associated with it but there again it was France?

Could have been a 'left at airfield'. Shame no serial visible.

Am looking forward to getting my copy of Then and Now France next week.

Does not seem to be anything in Twelve Days in May.

Any thoughts?

Hi Mark,

Yes, the code should be SO, so the 145 Sqn. Evidently Mark I version. There is no Sky band on the fuselage then 1940 year. If you see the green unfolding and dry land it´s late spring / early summer.
I think the picture is about Operation Dynamo time. Maybe 27th May when Sqn was in fight with Bf 110s and lost four a/c but three pilots returned ?

The problem with 145 Sqn is that according to Jefford-RAF Squadrons they never operated in France being based at Tangmere for most of the Battle of France. They could of course have operated over France from Tangmere. SD is the marking for 501 Sqn and they were in France.

Sorry, no individual aircraft code given. Given the fact the survivours returned to the UK via sea, one could assume the squadron was operating over France.

This is almost certainly one of the No.145 Squadron aircraft lost on operations over France late May - early June 1940 and possibly, as Michal & Peter say, one of three aircraft lost on May 27 in circumstances that could match the photograph. Based at Tangmere, their 'A' Flight moved to Manston on May 17 to form a composite squadron with 'B' Flight of No.601 Squadron. They flew across to Abbeville then on to Vitry for operations on May 17 returning to England that evening and operated from Merville on the following day. These were the only two occasions that they operated from airfields in France though they also flew several sorties over France from Manston.

Peter -Yes I am looking forward to the book. Did a lot of research on 73 Sqn / P3351 just to find out it was coded 'K' in France - 5 years of research!

Nice photo.

Still looking for a photo of an inverted Hurricane P2803/‘K’ of 73 sqn that P/O P E G Carter turned over on 24th May after combat with Bf110's. First combat. Probably then thought 'K was lucky.

Don't suppose that it could be P/O P.L.Parrott's Hurricane N2589 down at Little Mongeham on 26th May 40, would British have taken or been alowed to take souvenir's at this time ?

UK or France?

Must be coastal with the deformation of the trees from the prevailing weather. (Leaning)

Summer wheat does on help or is it to early/late for wheat in May/June?

Building - steep roof, white render and shutters - France or UK. Not what I call English Architecture?

Well trodden patch and damaged and panel strewn Hurricane. If the UK it would have had a Home Guard of something and I doubt a Hurricane would have got to that condition.

Still think it is France.
