Seeking ID of Whitley Bomber down at Kiel @7.40

Hello,

(See earlier posts about German photos sold yesterday on TOCH). Another photo sold on eBay shows a Whitley bomber which apparently was damaged by Marine Flak over Kiel about summer 1940 Can anyone provide a candidate for this loss?

Thanx,

Hi Larry
A quick look at Chorley BCL Vol 1 gives 3 possible candidates from Jul 1940.
1-2 Jul 40,58 Sqn Whitley V,N1461, crashed nr Kiel on an op to hit the Scharnhorst, 4 crew KIA , Sgt J P Caldwell POW
6-7 Jul 40, 102 Sqn Whitley V, N1523, DY-B, Op Kiel 5 crew POW
8-9 Jul 40, 10 Sqn Whitley V, N1496, believed shot down off Heligoland by Ofw Paul Forster, 5 crew POW
I don't doubt there are more!!
Regards
Dick

I nominate Whitley N1496 of No 10 Squadron, shot down by a night fighter 8/9 July 1940 and reportedly ditched off Helgoland. Crew: 5 x POW.

Hello Leendert,
How about "GE-L" N1463 17/18 June 40 crashed on land identified as the SCHALKIJKSE HEUL, alongside the Beusichemsedijk on the south bank of the river Lek at Beusichem (Gelderland), Holand ?
Is there too much water/sea in the background for it to have been this a/c ?

Alex,

Chris has answered the question all right, but Alex, it couldn't have been the Whitley in Holland as you proposed. You would have seen the other bank of the Lek River on a picture

Hello,

Chris is right. I know about another photograph made from 8 o´clock what clearly shows the letter code.

Gentlemen,

Thanks to all for your coments. Fairlop, do you have a way that I can see the other photo to which you're referring, or a reference where it might be posted on the internet?

Larry,

The photo was sold on Ebay in April 2006. Unfortunately I was not winner of the auction but I still have defaced copy of that picture in my database. Attached is an extract of the fuselage.
