Night Fighter Questions
Can anyone tell me please, who the Kommandeur of II./NJG 4 was on 01.01.43 - full name if possible and rank.
Secondly, does anyone know the first names of Major Stoltenhoff, the Kommodore of NJG 4 on 01.01.43, and the first name of the Kommodore of NJG 5 on the same date. Lastly, Hauptmann Friedrich Tober of III./NJG 3, was forced to crash land his Ju 88 in the winter of 1943/44 following a difficult encounter with a bomber. Does anyone have access to the loss cards in order to pinpoint the exact date of this incident? Any help concerning any of the questions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance! |
Re: Night Fighter Questions
Hi David,
From the Luftwaffe 1939-45 website, I got the following: Hptm Theodor Rossiwall was Gruppenkommandeur of II./NJG 4 from 1.10.42 to 13.1.43. The name was Rudolf Stoltenhoff. The Kommodore of NJG 5 on 1.1.43 was Maj Fritz Schaffer, 30.9.42 - 1.8.43. Sorry, but I don't have anything on Hptm Tober. George |
Re: Night Fighter Questions
David,
No loss cards but a copy of Balss. "Lastly, Hauptmann Friedrich Tober of III./NJG 3, was forced to crash land his Ju 88 in the winter of 1943/44 following a difficult encounter with a bomber. Does anyone have access to the loss cards in order to pinpoint the exact date of this incident?" Balss records the incident as being 30 1 1944 13.00 se Hardenberg following combat. Ju 88 C-6 750811 R4 + LS 8./ NJG 2 - not III./NJG 3? Oblt. Freidrich Tober - wounded bailed out Fw. Heinz Claus - Killed Uffz. Erich Gernegross - Killed Hope that this helps |
Re: Night Fighter Questions
Well, that crash site of Oblt. Tober is more or less in my back yard. I showed Herr Tober the location some years ago. I believe he was shot down by P-47. And this was not a crashlanding but a high impact crash. Cheers, John Manrho/Hardenberg,

Re: Night Fighter Questions
Andy and John,
Many thanks to you both, i am extremely grateful for the time and trouble you have gone to in order to supply this information, as it is needed in a forthcoming book i have coming out as part of the Jagdwaffe series concerning the history of the Nachtjagd. Many thanks once again. |
Re: Night Fighter Questions
George,
Apologies for oversight. Many thanks also for your information, which has filled a couple of gaps i had in my own information. Thanks for taking the time to help. |
Re: Night Fighter Questions
A very old post this, but I am trying to piece together who shot down Tober. I have one likely candidate so far: Bud Mahurin, 63rd FS/56th FG, shot down one Ju 88 and claimed another probably south of Quackenbrück at 1255 hours, flying P-47D-5 42-8487 "UN-M".
Tober's crash is reported as happening near Ebbenbroek (80 km west of Quackenbrück, just over the Dutch border) at around 1300 hours. But I wonder if there could be a 1-hour time difference between the two reported times (GMT and GMT+1?). Also Mahurin's Ju 88 claims are probably not the only ones, but I haven't found any other Ju 88 claims thusfar. The 56th FG claimed 14 destroyed this day, so likely others claimed Ju 88s as well (but so far I've only found a bunch of Me 210s, claimed after 1300 hours near Lingen). The 353rd FG also claimed: one Ju 88 destroyed and one damaged. Who knows more? |

Re: Night Fighter Questions
Would anyone have more information of who could have shot down Tober's Ju 88?
I have updated the artwork to represent Tober's aircraft: http://www.digitalaviationart.com/fo...ber_web900.jpg http://www.digitalaviationart.com/fo...sk_web1350.jpg |
