This photo of captured Japanese P40s would seem to have a B17 towards the top/middle. What do you think?

Japanese captuared at least one B-17D at Java, JAAF 64th Santai used this B-17 to praticing their headon attacking tactics against US "heavies" in 1943

Aloha All,
The NMF B-17C 40-3095 61/11B was flown from Hickam Field to Clark Field leaving 5 Sept 1941. The pilot was Captain Colin P Kelly, 0-20811, 42nd Bomb Sqdn (H). The Japanese kept the plane in those markings, however so briefly, and a GHOSTLY image of the "61" stayed on the plane.

The B-17Es were captured in Java.

My father was in 42nd Bomb Sqdn (H) from 1940 until 1945. He may have known the pilot.

A lady sent me a photo of my father with the crew of a B-17 he was a gunner on. It was taken 12/10/1941 three days after the attack. They were flying around Hawaii looking for Japanese.

The ladys' Uncle was the pilot a man named Cox on the date of 12/10/1941. On Easter Sunday 1942 , my father being a Tech Sgt. did not go out for patrol. That very day this B-17 hit a mountain in Hawaii coming back as did a B-24 the same day. Everyone was lost.

I will try to send the photo and names. The 42 Squadron was the first Army Air Corp to go into the Pacific after the Japanese Attack.

My father is Sgt. Heilman, the photo is from December, there is no photo of the crew that crashed on Easter Sunday 1942

According to "Fortress of the Skies" by Martin Bowman and William N Ness the Japanese captured 3 B17s. From the look of the nose on your photo I think it might B17D,40-3095, damaged at Clark Field on 8/12/41 and abandoned. The Japanese repaired and flew it along with another B17D and an early B17E

The "...another B-17D" was used for parts to keep 40-3095 in the air. Check out the late Mitchell, John H., On Wings We Conquer [Springfield, MO: G.E.M. Publishers, 1990] for details and the serial number lists which John and I worked on together. Your interlibrary loan department in your local library can get you a copy.

Two Java-based B-17Es were made airborne by the Japanese.

The aircraft at the end of the line, past the B-17, is a Brewster Buffalo.
