Junkers 88 A4 Identity

Hi everyone,
I have a con plate from a JU88 and wondered if I could enlist some help on how to obtain an ID for it.
Apart from asking the vast body of intelligence here, does anyone know of any publications that could assist a novice like me?
The details on the plate are :

Beuart hgg
------------
Gerat-Nr 9-6101.40
Werk-Nr 3909
Hersteller aus
------------
fur motor Jumo 211 (F-possible, not sure)
ln Ju88 A4
Kuhlstoff Wasser
Nachprufdr 2.5 atu
Ventileinst (blank)
Abnahme stamped BA2240 and OK

As my knowledge of German is non existent, can anyone help me with the meaning of each section as well as any assistance with the ID of the aircraft.
Having established it's ID, where would I go to find some history on it. I believe, although not confirmed, that it may have been lost in the Murmansk area.

Thanks - as always - for your help.

Re: Junkers 88 A4 Identity

It's an engine plate rather than the aircraft's (the "9-" bit indicates an engine, an "8-" would be an aircraft, as in ""8-88" for a Ju 88 etc.) Egines of course could be removed from one aircraft and fitted to another during their life.

Beuart hgg = should be "Bauart" and denotes the manufacturer whose code was "hgg" (someone here will know who that was but I don't!)
------------
Gerat-Nr 9-6101.40 = Device (or equipment) number
Werk-Nr 3909 = Werk Nummer or factory serial number of the item
Hersteller aus = "manufacturer from..." (so posssibly incomplete)
------------
fur motor Jumo 211 (F-possible, not sure) = for Jumo 211 Motor
ln Ju88 A4 = [fitted] in a Ju 88 A-4
Kuhlstoff Wasser = water-cooled
Nachprufdr 2.5 atu = pressure tested to 2.5 atmospheres
Ventileinst (blank) = an abbreviation I think: Ventil can relate to either engine valves or ventilation
Abnahme stamped BA2240 and OK = acceptance (I guess BA2240 denotes the person/establishment that OK'd the engine for use)

"hgg" was Süddeutsche Kühlerfabrik Julius Fr.Behr., Stuttgart-Feuerbach

Thanks all for your help. I guess the engine could be any Ju88, is there anyway of telling which aircarft it was on?

I suppose "in the field" they may have been moved around anyway, from aircraft to aircraft.

Thanks once again

Hi again,

I agree with Nick and George, and the plate seems to be from the cooling system. From memory the manufacturer mentioned I believe specialised in radiators and the like. I don't believe that there would be any way of saying that this was from a particular aircraft.

Whatever, the plate is of interest as it is obviously from that type of aircraft anyway, maybe it would be worth trying to trace it's route from yourself back to where it came from!

Regards

David

Hi Gaham,
I have an idetical data plate as probably yours. I bought mine in Murmansk when I was flying out in a helicopter looking at crahed aircraft. It would beinteesting to know if the data plte is original or if the russians have started to manufactur false ones to get some cash. Could you send me youremailadress and then w can scan in the plates and look if they are identical.
Where did you et yours?
Best regards

Hi all,

Just my two-pennies. Nick Beale answer is good explanation. However the Hersteller (manufacturer) in this case is: ´aus´ = Adam Opel/Russelheim (making thousands of these items for Jumo 211 F/J series.

Engine cooler PART plate from Ju 88 A-4 / C-6 / D-1 series (Jumo 211 F/J engine series). I have seen W.Nr´s below and abowe 3909 (3309 & 5909 respectevely). I whould guess on Ju 88 series a/c made in Bernburg in about very late 1941 to early half of 1942.

No chance to make Aircraft W.Nr. i.d. without exact crash location (could be any time from 1942 to 1944 if in UK).
