Kampfgruppe 40 (KG-40) Records

I am researching KG-40 for the period of January and February 1941and hope that someone might know where any records might be. I have a friend at the National archives, so can have a look around there if you could point me to a file number.

A good place to start is the HW 13 series at the NA. You'll find lots of stuff in there. If you are after operational material, then HW 13/95 has some intelligence on a load of units operating for the period you are looking at.

Word of warning though if you go looking to photocopy the document - it is several hundred pages long on rather thin wax paper. You'll either have to sit and read through it day by day and pick out what you want, or con your friend into spending half an hour taking digital pictures of each day's entries (about 30 minutes to do the whole file, depending on how speedy you are).

I presume you mean Kampfgeschwader 40. It depends what you are looking for-there is (as far as I am aware) no war diary. In respect of losses, I/KG 40 (which was all that existed operationally at that time) lost one FW 200 in January plus one damaged in an accident and two more damaged by Flak. In February, it lost two to Flak (crashing in Eire & Portugal), one in an accident and one damaged by Flak

Helló,

To start with you could look into RL 2 III / 753 covering 01.01.41 to 30.05.41. : Flugzeugunfalle und Verluste bei den Fliegenden Verbanden. You would then go over to RL 10 / 505 and RL 10 /563. .: Kampfgeschwader 40, organisation, ausbildung, einsatz, taktik. A smart move befor going is to look into: www.ww2.dk hit on Kampfgeschwader 40 to see the work done by others. Buy the book by Barry C. Rosch, : Luftwaffe codes, Markings & Units 1939-1945 and take it with you and have fun for months to come.

good luck.

Hi Adam,

Are these records any good? Are they worth a look at if you are at Kew?

Regards,

Mark

As long as you recognise the records are British intelligence based on radio intercepts and are therefore subject to the odd inconsistency, they are a good place to start - especially if you speak no German.

The attached is a digital camera shot of a page taken from the next file in the series which deals with July - October 1941 as a guide to what it includes.
