First half pretty strong, second half weakened by infusing a "good german" theme. The same politically correct thread seems to (almost) work in Das Boot, but IMHO it fails to be believable in Stalingrad.

Enemy at the Gates is an attempt to create an epic war movie with romance etc, Stalingrad is an attempt at a gritty war movie. Both have their moments, both fail to carry through. IMHO Enemy at the Gates is more entertaining.

7/10 or B-

Ruy - did You read that reveiw about "Enemy at..."?

From my opinion - author of that reveiw is 100% right.

All veterans who saw that film, said almost the same -

"This film is spittle in our souls, on our faces and on graves of our friends".

And I totally agree. Seems the main idea of film was to show the all russians as pig-looking idiots without brain but with "money and fame hunger" in soul :(

0/10.

Take almost all Hollywood movies about the war : How are the german soldiers represented ?
Be not so sensitively ;)

Movies are made to entertain people.

Enemy at the Gates isn't about Soviet history, it is a war movie made in the west and as such I found it entertaining.

We all have different tastes and "rules", and Enemy at the Gates manages to comply with a number of my requirements. For instance my spouse enjoyed the "story" as much as I did, the story that is set with the Battle of Stalingrad in the background.

Yes, it is full of clichés and a depiction of stereotypes and preconceived western ideas of the wartime Soviet Union. But if I forget that I have 2 hrs or so movie adventure.

Stalingrad didn't leave me we an adventure, so I had to dig into the history and as such its theme fell short. That's the problem with a serious war epic, it has to be really good to be significant. In the end Stalingrad was just as mediocre as Enemy at the Gates, without the excuse.

Note I have both on DVD, both with their place.

Next time remind me of Pearl Harbor vs Tora Tora Tora! :mh:
