Me 109G at Volkel Airbase September 1944
Dear friends,
According to A.I.2(g) report serial No.257 dated 25th Octobr, 1944, Enemy aircraft crashed in France, Belgium and Holland, pag.12 and I quote: a Me 109G with W.Nr.165626 with a DB 605A-1 engine was found burned out at Volkel Airfield. This airplane must have been left behind in the first week of September 1944 when the Luftwaffe has left Volkel airfield. The first Allied units have occupied the airfield at September 19th, 1944. We have not been able to find out from which unit this plane was. There are indications that it was from JG 77. From an aerial photo we have the impression that the RLV band at the plane could have been from JG 77. Who could give us a hand? As far as we know JG 77 planes have not been stationed at Volkel during 1944. Was it a crash? Maybe a crash during Market-Garden? Who has more information? Looking forward for any information. Re: Me 109G at Volkel Airbase September 1944
After discussion with several people and further research we know now that it was not a plane from JG 77. The KTB of JG 77 made that very clear.
We also have received information that it could be a plane(s) of JG 76. III./JG 76 was transferred from Stade(D.) to Anthies(F.) at August 20/21, 1944. Maybe with a stop and an accident at Volkel(Neth.)? Jaap |
