Bundesarchiv related
I've stumbled across what appears to be an index in PDF form. It is over 600 pages but loaded quickly for me.

If you look at http://www.gyges.dk/files_in_das_bundesarchiv.htm you will find even more findbuchs!

Re: Bundesarchiv related
Have any of you chaps had any experience in obtaining files from the Bundesarchiv? Does it work in a similar principle to the NA here in London, where you can go and look up files yourself or hire a researcher?
Thanks Steve |
Re: Bundesarchiv related
I was a few timen in this archive in Freiburg.
First of all, you have to make an appointment for the days you would like to spend the time in the archive. When you are there, you will find about 100 binders with the content of the archive only. You have to go through this binders - what is very time consuming - in oder to give the assistant a list of binders/information you looking for. Based on that the assistant will look for this binders - please take into account about 4 hours to get this binders from the storage area. Finally you can search in this binders in a room with desks and chairs till you find the related info you looking for. That's it. Don't expect too much help from the assistance. This people are very friendly -. no doupt - but they do not know in which binders are what information. Best regards Rolf |
Re: Bundesarchiv related
With the help pdfs linked to earlier in this discussion you can pre-order some documents that will be on your desk on the day of arrival. By doing so you can use your time more efficient switching between working in the findbuchs and going through the documents you've ordered.
The staff is friendly and quite helpfull, though they might point out that you're only permitted to access a limited number of folders per day (is it three or five?) but if you explain that you've travelled a long way they're usually ok with serving you with more. Depending on who's working their knowledge in english can be somewhat limited. Unfortunately there are restrictions against using digital cameras unlike at Kew and many other archives. If you go there, you won't be bored! :-) |
Re: Bundesarchiv related
Hallo Rolf und Mikael
Vielen Dank. I wasn't sure if it would be like the NA here in London or not. It sounds a bit behind the state of the NA, but as you say the the indexes in the attached pdf documents will help me prepare in advance. As for the question of language, that's no problem as I speak fluent German. Do you know if there are researchers who can look on my behalf? Still bound to be cheaper than flying over... Re: Bundesarchiv related
It's a long time since I went but the system was pretty Stone Age.
The NA was well ahead then and is far better now. OTOH London's public transport system is not a patch now on what Freiburg's was all those years ago. |
