50th FG losses Normandy 1944

Hello gentlemen ,

On 26 August 1944 , P-47 # 42-25983 flown by Lt Lloyd Page Jr and P-47 # 42-25759 ( pilot ? ) , both 313rd FS were claimed shot down by Luftwaffe ace Klaus Mietusch near Rouen . I'm very much looking for any information about these two USAAF pilots . Any 50th FG Association around ?

Laurent

Not exactly an association but a page that might be useful and lead to a contact.

Laurent,

Pilot of 42-25759 was 2nd Lt Clair B. Edel (O-700834). He was from Iowa.

1st Lt. Lloyd Page Jr. (O-695335) was from Maryland.

Both buried at Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer.

Leendert

Many thanks gentlemen !
Lt Lloyd Page's crash-site is known , I'm still looking for Lt Clair Edel's.
Obviously these were the last Klaus Mietusch's claims before his death.

Major Klaus Mietusch

Hi Laurent

Actually, Mietusch did make one more claim (75) against a P-51 fighter of the 361st FG, USAAF in the same air battle that he was later killed on 17 September 1944. Could this have been P-51B (42-106944) "E9-A" of the 367th FS flown by Lt Woodrow W Glover who was killed?

Horrido!

Leo

Laurent,

Edel's MACR says as location (map reference) M1505 as last seen.
This would roughly translate in 49°21'04 N and 1°02'52 E, or the southern rim of Rouen.

I'm not that experienced with map conversions, so perhaps another forum member is willing to do the calculation for you just to be sure.

Regards,

Leendert
